MANUFACTURER'S CORNER
November, 2008
Every drycleaner has had the problem of a faulty garment causing problems to other garments in the load. But to get compensation from the manufacturer of the offending garment is nigh on impossible. Well not anymore!
A recent situation occurred in Brisbane where a drycleaner found a faulty garment had destroyed 22 other garments in a load. Looking at a $4,000 replacement bill, unhappy customers and a ruined reputation, the drycleaner took on the challenge of getting compensation from the responsible party.
Engaging the assistance of Brisbane based textile technologist, Steven Pyott, who investigated the complaint, the drycleaner was able to present a case that the faulty garment was the cause of damage to the rest of the load. The importer of the garment, New Twist Pty Ltd, initially offered a paltry 30% of the claim. During another month of intense negotiations the import company finally paid up in full.
Steven Pyott has indicated that he has been involved with three complaints where a single garment has wrecked the rest of the load and it appears his reports have been the key to getting some action from the manufacturer involved.
Due to the number of complaints being received by Steven's company, he has opened a website naturally enough called www. drycleaningcomplaints.com.au. Following this story Steve has also appeared on the ABC being interviewed about consumer textile problems that can occur with laundering and drycleaning.
The more that drycleaners take on these manufacturers, the more chance there is that care labelling will improve. Well done Steve on this occasion and for the great article that appeared in the Courier Mail.
