    DLI GARMENT ALERTS (Page 1):

These Garment Alerts are generously provided by the Drycleaning and Laundry Institute (D.L.I.) in the U.S.A. Obviously since these are U.S. garment alerts, not all them will be applicable to Australia's market. However, they are listed for possible relevance if the particular garment has been sold in Australia and also for the useful information that these alerts can contain about the types of garment problems that can occur during dry cleaning and laundering.

If you wish to become a member of the DLI you can contact them directly through their U.S. web site and join directly by paying their subscription. However, if you are already a member of the Drycleaning Institute of Australia (DIA), you will now receive all DLI membership benefits in Australia, including receiving the excellent monthly DLI journal 'Fabricare', which includes the invaluable TABS series of technical bulletins, and you can also receive the periodic 'Heads Up' e-mail notifications of DLI Garment Alerts.

    DLI GARMENT ALERT:
    August 8, 2008

ED HARDY KNIT HOODIE  -A cream cashmere sweater hoodie with heart and skull tattoo-style designs. It also has black flock print lettering. We have seen this same sweater in other colors with various tattoo designs. During drycleaning in perchlorethylene (perc) the bonding agent holding the black flock letters on the fabric, as well as some of the pigment print colours, are disturbed causing a loss of design. Again we have seen this flock print disturbance problem on similar fashions made by the same manufacturer.

BURBERRY LADIES COAT - Ladies tan, polyester, all-weather coat with urethane-type inner coating. During even a short drycleaning cycle in a moisture-controlled perchlorethylene cleaning system with low temperature drying, the coating softened, causing separation and sticking. Drycleaning resulted in severe puckering.

NAUTICA MEN'S SPORTS JACKET  - A silk, tan green men's sport jacket. The care label reads: "dry clean only" with no international code symbols. After drycleaning in perchlorethylene (perc), the areas that were backed with an interfacing, such as the cuffs, pockets, shoulders, and bottom hem, now look a shade darker. The adhesive material used to bind the facings to the shell fabric partially dissolved in solvent during drycleaning, leached to the surface, and caused self-staining.

The plastic used to make this decorative design dissolves during drycleaning. Steam finishing and/or heat are not factors, so the label warning is not viable.

LANDS END MEN'S DRESS SHIRT - A blue cotton pinpoint oxford man's dress shirt.  During laundering the front placket interfacing on the buttonhole side, as well as the cuff interfacings separate from the shell fabric and shrink. This creates adverse distortion of the cotton shell fabric.
